hello
« on: October 23, 2015, 11:36:45 PM »
Hi I'm Jake and I have had depression for only around 5 years but its a battle I have always tried to do on my own, it has always been bad but the last 4 months have been hell. I'm only sleeping 2 hours then waking up then repeating throughout the night. I'm also always thinking I have cancer or some sort of diseases like cancer etc...

And I constantly have an anxious feeling and deep depression. I just want to know if this is normal or am I just that skewed up. I can be out with friends or family but I always feel alone or in my own little depressing bubble.

PLEASE HELP thanks :)

You're definitely not alone with how you are feeling!  Have you had any kind of talking therapy or meds or anything like that to help you to cope with your depression and anxiety?    if you want it?   ^-^

Hi

You're definitely not alone although it might feel that way. It feels like nobody can help and that nobody understands. Have you spoken to your GP? If you don't want to do that alone, is there anybody who you trust who would go with you.  It sounds like that might be the first step for you. Don't be afraid of having that discussion. I think a number of us have tried coping on our own but there's no shame in admitting that you do need some help. That might be in the form of some medication, some counselling, a referral to specialist mental health services or a combination of those. If you do go and get advice, you can always return here if you have any more questions although this is no substitute for proper medical advice.

Good luck and welcome

 :welcome: Jake,

I've suffered with depression for most f my life although I wasn't 'officially' diagnosed until 2005.  It got to the stage I wasn't eating, couldn't concentrate, my OCD got worse (usually managable) and couldn't sleep more 2 - 3 hours a night.  Fortunately I have a lovely friend who is a nurse who went through all my symptons and told her partner who is a doctor.  She relayed back advice until her partner said I should see my GP as he was very concerned about my well being.

It is a good idea to see your GP who can work with you to help ease your symptons.  Being a member here will be a safe haven for you as you won't be judged for being depressed.  Just knowing that others know what it is like helps.

It sounds like your GP knows what they are on about!  Were you offered any kind of talking therapy or anything?  Do you feel it would help you to have someone professional to talk to or not really?    if you want it?

That's how I felt too when I started seeing Dr Invisible but anyone worth their job will be able to put you at ease and be able to encourage you to talk instead of pressuring you into it and they'll ask you open questions too so don't feel too worried about it... they know what they're doing - usually!   :happy0158:  Maybe start thinking up a list of questions you want to ask or points you want to cover and take it with you when the referral comes through?  That's what I did!   :happy0158:

Amanda doesn't appear to be going to tell you about about Fluoxetine and Propranolol so I thought I would.

Propraolol is a member of a large group of drugs called Beta Blockers. They have a very wide number of uses but until recently not Psychiatry. They were used in heart arrhythmias, heart failure, blood pressure control and still are. They have been given to you for anxiety. They don't control all aspects of anxiety. They tend to work on the physical aspects, Rapid Heart Beat, Rapid Breathing, Sweaty palms. They aren't supposed to work on anxious thoughts, although I have met people who claimed they did. I take their word for it. I had to persuade my father to take propranolol each day for the four odd years I looked after him while he died of heart failure. So anything you want to know just ask. I know it all too well.

Fluoxetine, better known as Prozac, was the first drug in a set that is probably the widest used now, the SSRI's. They affect the processing of a primarily brain chemical Serotonin. It is as effective as any other anti-depressant. As side effects go it is pretty good. Insomnia and Gut problems are the most common. With any luck you won't get any.

I hope your waiting time for counselling isn't too long. They vary widely over the country. Everyone who has counselling is nervous when they start. As you get to know your worker things will improve. In my experience they almost always did. Good luck with the drugs and the counselling.

Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
What a long, strange, trip it's been

Hi Jake, and a rather late welcome to the forums,
what you describe does sound bad, the lack of sleep alone can make things worse,
if you haven done so yet, have a chat with your doc, if they are any good they will try and help.

Medication may be the thing that helps, Cirtraline at a low dose is one they could start with.

also, see if there is a MIND office in your area, they have very good support workers.
